School of Stomatology, Kunming Medical University is formerly known as the Department of Stomatology of Kunming Medical school which was founded in 1979 and formally enrolled five-year undergraduate students in the fall. It is one of the earliest medical colleges in China to train stomatology undergraduate students. In 2000, it was renamed as School of Stomatology of Kunming Medical University (KMU) and then the Department of Stomatology of Yunnan Medical College was merged into it in 2010.
The School of Stomatology of KMU, the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of KMU and Yunnan Provincial Stomatological Hospital has implemented a management system of "three brands and one set of management teams", integrating the following responsibilities:education, scientific research, as well as medical treatment and service.
Stomatology is a national characteristic specialty and clinical stomatology is a key discipline in Yunnan Province. As the only one stomatology master degree project in Yunnan, the school began to recruitmaster students in 1986 and became the first-level discipline master degree authorization in 2003.
During the 13th Five-Year plan, stomatology was awarded as the provincial brand specialty, first-class specialty, the first outstanding doctor training project, provincial doctoral construction discipline, first-class discipline and national first-class undergraduate specialty construction in 2020. In 2021, stomatology was approved the first-level discipline to award doctor’s degree and professional doctorate.
At present, the school of stomatology has built a multi-level talent training system including five-year undergraduate,master's, doctoral, international students and continuing education, and formed its own characteristic talent training mode. Since its establishment, the school has trained more than 2000 graduates for society.
Relying on the comprehensive advantages of Kunming Medical University, the school (hospital) brings together a group of outstanding talents. As the only stomatology teaching and research base in Yunnan province, it has 9 teaching and research rooms,1 experimental teaching demonstration center and 1 research institute. The institute of stomatology has been approved as a provincial key laboratory of stomatology in 2020.
The school (hospital) takes medical research and education as its mission. During the 13th Five-Year plan period,its scientific research achievements reached a new high. It has won 192 scientific research projects (including 12 horizontal projects), including 13 National Natural Science Foundation Projects, 1 National Social Science Foundation Projects,2 first prizes, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes of Yunnan Science and Technology Progress. In 2019, the class and number of awards achieved a historic breakthrough since the establishment of the school.
The school (hospital) holds or hosts international and domestic academic exchange conferences every year, and has established friendly and cooperative relations with dental colleges in the United States, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries and regions.Over the years, more than 40 teachers have been sent to the United States,Canada, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan and other countries to study. As one of its sponsors, the school joined the Mekong Regional Dental International Collaboration (IDCMR) in 2004 and joined the Southeast Asian Dental Education Association(SEAADE) in 2013, actively participating in the annual academic exchanges and visits in the field of international oral medicine, which has strongly promoted the interaction and cultural exchanges between Yunnan and Southeast Asian countries in scientific research and education of stomatology.
The hospital has 508 teaching and medical staff, 58 professional and technical personnel with senior titles, 9 doctoral supervisors and 37 master supervisors by March 2021. More than 86 percent of doctors has a master's degree or above. Hospital is equipped with 194 sets of dental chairs, and 34 beds, a total of 15 clinical and medical technic department (Endodontics、Periodontics、Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery、 Prosthodontics、Orthodontics、Pediatric Dentistry、Oral Prevention、Dental Implantology、Oral General Department,Temporomandibular Joint Specialist、Oral Cavity Mucosa Department, Special Clinic, Dental Imaging, Disinfection Center, Operating Room) ,forming an oral health care service network in Kunming city, with HeCheng Guo Ji Building C in Mid-Haiyuan Road as the headquarters, five affiliated clinics in south, north, downtown and Chenggong district. The quality of oral medical service has been steadily improved through multi-point clinics with an annual out-patient number of more than 350,000.
