Introduction to Postgraduate Education

The postgraduate education management of The Affiliated Stomatology Hospital of Kunming Medical University operates under the unified leadership of the hospital’s Party committee and administrative team. It shoulders a wide array of crucial responsibilities, including construction of postgraduate degree programs, postgraduate ideological and political education, postgraduate enrollment, cultivation, degree defense and daily management, standardized training for resident doctors, continuing medical education and other tasks.

The stomatology program at Kunming Medical University was approved to enroll five-year undergraduate students in 1979. It started enrolling master degree students in 1986, and it was granted the right to confer the first-level discipline degree in stomatology and the master’s professional degree in stomatology in 2003. In 2012, relying on clinical medicine, it began to recruit and cultivate doctoral students. In 2021, it was granted the right to confer the first-level discipline doctorate degree in stomatology and the doctorate professional degree in stomatology. The stomatology program is a national first - class program, and the stomatology discipline is a key discipline in Yunnan Province. It possesses the Yunnan Key Laboratory of Stomatology, the Yunnan International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Stomatology, and a provincial - level post - doctoral research station. The Affiliated Stomatology Hospital, established in 2006, is a tertiary- level specialized stomatological hospital, and contains 15 clinical departments and 6 branch outpatient departments. It serves as an important base for cultivating senior stomatological talents in Yunnan Province. In 2007, it was approved as the only “National Practice Skills Examination Base for the Qualification Examination of Practicing Physicians (Stomatology Category)” in Yunnan Province. In 2014, it was approved as a national standardized training base for resident doctors. In 2021, it was approved as the Yunnan Provincial Clinical Medical Center for Oral Diseases and the Yunnan Provincial Clinical Medical Research Center for Oral Diseases. It has 1 national-level key clinical specialty (Pediatric Stomatology Department) and 7 provincial-level key clinical specialties. In 2023, it was awarded the Yunnan Province “Oral Health Promotion” Industry - University - Research Joint Training Base for Professional Master Degree Students in Stomatology.

Currently, the degree program boasts 91 full - time teachers. Among them, there are 21 full professors, 28 associate professors, 16 doctoral supervisors, and 48 master’s supervisors. A total of 37 teachers have overseas study experiences. Teachers with doctoral degrees account for 61.5%, and more than 50% of the teachers graduated from institutions other than this university. Moreover, 64% of the full - time teachers are under 45 years old. At present, there are 287 postgraduate students studying, with 43 of them being doctoral students.

As a pivotal base for postgraduate education in stomatology in Southwest China, the degree program takes standardized management, moral education, service requests, quality improvement, and excellence pursuit as its core work principles.
