Yunnan Key Laboratory of Stomatology, formerly known as the “Yunnan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research Center” established in 1988, was approved as the “Yunnan Stomatology Institute” in 2014 and the “Yunnan Key Laboratory of Stomatology” in 2021. In 2023, it passed the acceptance inspection and officially became the Yunnan Key Laboratory of Stomatology.

With the support and guidance of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Kunming Medical University, and the School of Stomatology (Hospital), the laboratory has a professional experimental area of 1,100 m², covering molecular biology platforms, tissue morphology platforms, cell experiment platforms, biomaterial platforms, microbiology platforms, and a bioinformatics processing database. The laboratory currently has a cumulative investment of approximately more than 27 million yuan in scientific research instruments and equipment, including large-scale instruments such as the high-content imaging analysis system, high-performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometers, small animal in- vivo imaging system, Micro - CT, hard tissue cutting and grinding system, 3D bioprinters, laser scanning confocal live - cell platforms, PCR instruments, ultra-high-speed centrifuges, gel imaging system, flow cytometers, multi - functional microplate readers, cryostat microtomes, and slide scanners.

Based on the historical accumulation of generations of stomatologists from Kunming Medical University, the laboratory integrates the existing scientific research and teaching teams, takes into account clinical scientific research, and has been built into a first-class stomatology research institution in Yunnan Province. It plays an important role in supporting the discipline construction of stomatology and the cultivation of scientific research talents in Yunnan. Closely centering around the biomedical and massive health industries, with “comprehensive prevention and treatment research of oral diseases” as the main body, the laboratory has formed research directions such as the pathogenesis and comprehensive prevention and treatment of high - incidence head and neck tumors in Yunnan province, digital precise reconstruction of the maxillofacial region and research and development of personalized hard - tissue regeneration/repair materials, occurrence and correction of oral and maxillofacial deformities, foundamental and clinical research on the prevention and treatment of oral diseases using extracts from unique Yunnan plants and animals, and research on dental - derived mesenchymal stem cells and their derivatives.
